Thanks for your edits. Your project is becoming much more clear. A few additional comments:

Elevator: your masters project is a project, not an exploration of a project. A simple re-wording could strengthen you statement. Something like “the project will illustrate how built form and program can embody changing paradigms…”

Case: “Typical systems of education in the United States are based on standardized testing and outdated modes of teaching. These systems are stifling students creativity….”

Goals! Similar to the elevator comments. These are goals of your project, not your goals as a designer. Simply delete “to develop” in your first ore. Second are could be: the school will encourage interaction…”

Principles: perfect!

Process: (would like to see a rough time-line for you to achieve the activities you list. Sort of a map of how next semester will go. this will be for your use to make sure you achieve all that you set out to do by the end of next semester. For example, how much time will you leave yourself to pull all the work together and present it graphically?

Program: this is a good start, and I am glad you have included some justification for the sizes of spaces. Additional information such as how many students will be enrolled? How many will be on site at any given time? Will there be additional spaces to promote interaction by community members?

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions or even if you wish to skype to discuss anything further. Thanks.
Hi Amy,

I just submitted the latest version of what I have. I have been struggling somewhat with what exactly I want to achieve with my project (that's why it has taken me so long to submit something) but I think I am getting closer to what really intrigues me about it. I have changed most of what you have seen except for the title. I know that you commented last time on how you thought that the title 'house' was odd. What I mean by it though is that the facility would have the familiar, welcoming, and informal ambience of a house, in contrast to what a typical school might be like now. Maybe this point is not necessary in the title?

Talk to you tomorrow.

Thanks for your patience as I work through all the student topics. As I mentioned during our call, I like your topic and think the combination (education & sailing) has a lot of potential. Although it is a subtle difference, I think learning via “theory” and “application” become the premise of your project, as explored through the vehicle of “classroom learning” and “sailing activities”.

The title lacks the richness of your topic as I understand it. For example, I’m not sure why you’ve used the term “house”. And while your project is a facility that supports activity-based learning, the term “educational” seems static. See if you can rework your title to be as compelling as your idea.

As mentioned in the conference call, it’s clear that sailing can promote learning that is broader than just math – physics, geometry, weather, energy, history, science, oceanography & ecology, etc. and very likely will include social learning, self-sufficiency, recreation, safety and even joy/fun. You mention several of these, so I don’t think you expect it to be limited to math. However, you could focus on math as one of many learning experiences supported, if you wish.

For your case statement, the intent is for you to make a case, or argument as in a debate, for your project. Usually this includes a description of what is lacking (say, relevance in learning math). Use real data wherever possible. For example, what are the average math scores among school children in the US? in New York? in Manhattan? Why? Describe why sailing is appropriate? Describe what a typical student currently does after school.

Once you have adequately made the case using the current “conditions” and context, then you’re ready to explain how your project will address them. This is usually a paragraph or two.

Since you’re selected a site, make the case for why it’s good for your project. You have a good start at this, but elaboration would be good (and use data/facts as much as possible). Describe Hudson River Park. Why do you propose this site? What activities already occur here? What will happen to the program in winter when weather may prohibit activities? in summer when children are not in school?

Other questions to consider: Will parents/families be involved? Who will “teach” and how will they collaborate with the “classroom” teachers? How will students be selected for the program? How will it be funded? Etc…

This is a very good start, and I’m glad to see that you’re clear on your topic. Now it’s going to be about communicating your ideas more clearly…

Thanks!
